Andrew – Leckey MyWay+ Walker

 In Thank yous

Andrew is a bright and determined five-year-old living with his devoted mum Junyan and older sister Cathy. Diagnosed with global developmental delay and profound hypotonia caused by a rare chromosomal condition, Andrew faces daily challenges with mobility, speech, feeding, and coordination. Despite these difficulties, his goal is a simple yet powerful one:

“I would like to be able to participate to the best of my ability in as many activities as possible like other children do.”

Andrew and his family live in Australia on a Student Guardian Visa, which means he is ineligible for Medicare, the NDIS, and other forms of public support. With his mother unable to work due to visa restrictions and full-time caring responsibilities, and his father working overseas, the family faces considerable financial strain—particularly when it comes to affording essential assistive technology.

In late 2023, MAD supported Andrew with a specialised Xpanda Seat, providing the postural support he needs to sit safely and comfortably at the table, improving his ability to eat, play and engage with family. In 2024, MAD provided a Freedom Wheels Edge Trike, helping Andrew build strength and coordination while enjoying the outdoors. Most recently, in 2025, MAD assisted with a Leckey MyWay+ Walker, giving Andrew the chance to practise supported walking and move more independently.

Each of these supports has made a meaningful difference. His mum Junyan shared:

“Andrew is really enjoying the Xpanda seat. Thank you again for the help—we sincerely appreciate it.”

And his physiotherapist Julia wrote:

“On behalf of Andrew and Siyuan, I’d like to send a huge thank you for the funding provided for Andrew’s specialised trike.

Andrew is loving being able to ride, and is getting out around his local neighbourhood, as you can see by his face!

He is able to ring the bell and is currently working on pedalling and steering.

The trike is just magic – thanks so very much!!”

With continued therapy and support, Andrew is making steady progress, and each piece of equipment is helping him take part more fully in daily life.
